Formation for Formators Series (FFS)


Be a formator with competence and compassion


The Formation for Formators Series (FFS) is designed to:

  • Provide formators with current contextualized perspectives on different aspects of formation work
  • Equip them with necessary dispositions and skills to be effective formators
  • Accompany them in their ongoing process of personal and professional growth in the formation ministry

The module series will benefit religious, clergy, and lay people who are:

  • Beginners in the ministry of accompanying individuals in initial or continuing formation
  • Seasoned formators in need of opportunities for updating, re-tooling, and ongoing growth
  • Leaders and superiors responsible for the formation needs of their congregations, communities, or institutes

Program Details


Fundamentals of Human and Christian Formation


July 4-8 and 11-15, 2016 (stay-out)
Program Fees: Php 16,500


This course aims to present essential perspectives on how to understand human and Christian formation in the contemporary context. It is ideal for beginners in the formation ministry as well as experienced formators who will benefit from input and discussions focusing on the following:


  • Framework of human formation
  • Formation in the Christian tradition
  • Theories of human formation and development
  • The Psycho-Spiritual Integration process
  • Perspectives on change and transformation
  • Perspectives on formative spirituality

Exposure to formative processes like self-awareness exercises, counseling, spiritual direction, and discernment is also part of the course.

Ushering in Encounters with God: Fostering Formands' Prayerful Lives

A genuine vocation springs from a person’s relationship with God. It is birthed in an encounter with God and prayer occasions such as personal meetings with God. An important skill, therefore, for a formator to possess is the ability to assist those in his/her charge in: acquiring a proper understanding of what prayer is, developing helpful dispositions in prayer, and familiarizing them with various prayer ways. It is essential also for the formator to be adept at helping the formands articulate and relish what transpired in their prayers.

Trauma and Addictions

The module will guide participants through a basic understanding of the processes involved in trauma and addiction, how such experiences affect the normal course of human development and the capacities for love and work. Special focus will be directed to how experiences of trauma and addiction can affect a person's spiritual life, ability to make use of formation and live commitments, and ability to live in community. The teaching method will include experiential, reflective, and didactic learning approaches.

Our thoughts about a situation affect our emotional, behavioral and physical reactions to it. Cognitive-behavioral approaches help people make sense of and manage overwhelming problems and thus feel better by addressing unhelpful thoughts and behavior.


This workshop will introduce concepts and tasks which participants can apply to mental health issues in daily living such as symptoms of depression, anxiety and anger that do not require professional help.

Enneagram for Formators

Enneagram is an ancient tool used for self-discovery and spiritual growth. This course will introduce the participant to the dynamics behind the nine personality types as presented in the enneagram. This knowledge is meant to provide a tool for the formator, first, for one’s self in one’s continuing self-discovery and growth and second, as a tool to help in understanding and assisting formands in their own self-discovery and growth.


Topics include background on the enneagram, an in-depth look at the nine personality dynamics, movements and variations. Processes include paper and pen personality type assessment, lectures, readings, and group sharing.

Formation for Local Superiors: Leadership and Skills

This course is designed to equip local superiors with disposition and skills that will enable them to lead and serve their respective communities effectively. Local superiors not only act as role models but they also play multi-dimensional roles as leaders, formators, animators, facilitators, and communicators of congregational mission and inspiration. The course features input on leadership, management, group development, dialogue, and formative accompaniment in increasingly complex and multi-cultural religious congregational environments today.

Basic Concepts in Psycho-Sexual Formation

This course will tackle basic concepts and issues essential in moving towards psycho-sexual maturity. The topics discussed are aimed to inform, engage and challenge the participants in their understanding of psycho-sexual formation in the context of consecrated life and ministry.

  • Notions of Sexuality
  • Physical and Psychosexual Development
  • Development of Sexual Identity
  • Problematic Sexuality: Wounding and Healing
  • Affective Sexuality, Intimacy and Chaste/Celibate Sexuality

Developmental Transitions in Formation

All of us go through phases of human development and are called to face growth opportunities and challenges specific to these stages. This module will provide handles in understanding psycho-emotional development and explore the implications in religious life in the three important adult stages:


  • the search for identity of the young adult vis-à-vis the demands of initial formation;
  • the revisiting of commitments at mid-life vis-à-vis the demands for more responsibilities in ministry; and
  • the challenge of taking stock and embracing the call for a deeper spirituality for the eldering religious.

Ministerial Boundaries, Power and Self-Care

This module is designed to benefit those in the ministry of accompaniment, those in formation, pastoral, and leadership ministries. While caring and giving a safe space for others is essential, those in the ministry need to have clear and firm convictions regarding power differences, boundaries and self-care.


This module will present concepts on boundaries in accompaniment. It endeavors to define, discuss and nuance characteristics of healthy and unhealthy boundaries. Through workshops and case studies, the participants will gain firm convictions on compassionate and respectful accompaniment in ministry as well as engage in reflection on ways of self-care towards healthy living.

Psycho-Spiritual Integration (PSI) for Formators

Those in the ministry of formation will find in the PSI a valuable framework and process for doing formation. It is most useful in uncovering one’s actual self and verifying one’s calling in life. It is highly advantageous for formators whose formands undergo or have undergone the PSI program to experience the same process in order to better appreciate its effects on the latter and to more effectively accompany them in deepening its fruits.


For the ordained and professed, the PSI offers an opportunity to deepen their calling to the priesthood and/or religious life and live their vocation with greater integrity. The program will culminate in an individually directed retreat.

Spiritual Direction in the Formative Context

(For Spiritual Directors, Rectors and Formators)

This course is for religious, clergy and lay people who want to formally prepare themselves for the ministry of spiritual direction in the context of formation work. It features lectures on foundational concepts in spiritual direction, a prayer workshop, and individual spiritual accompaniment. With the proliferation of similar training programs on spiritual direction, Emmaus Center distinguishes its program by appropriating it in the formation context.

Formative Processing Skills


May 22-26 and 29-31, 2017 (stay-out)

Emmaus defines “formative processing” as a means of deepened reflection wherein an individual in the context of formation is helped to arrive at an expanded perspective, greater understanding, acceptance and owning of a significant personal experience. This is a skills-training course divided into two parts. Part 1 will offer inputs to teach and refine various skills pertinent to effective formative processing. Part 2 will give participants the opportunity to practice and have their processing skills critiqued and assessed.

REQUIREMENTS


  • English language will be the medium of instruction in the FFS programs. It will be helpful for international participants to have, at the least, conversational skills in the language.

  • Emmaus Center has forged a memorandum of agreement with Loyola School of Theology (LST) in the accreditation of Emmaus modular courses:

    • Fundamentals of Human and Christian Formation
    • Growing in Religious Vows
    • Assessment Skills in Formation
    • Basic Concept in Psycho-Sexual Formation
    • Formative Processing Skills

    as subjects that can earn credits for LST’s civil and ecclesiastical degree programs requiring units in the field of spirituality, pastoral ministry and pastoral psychology.
